Brucellosis in livestock in bangladesh diagnosis seroprevalence epidemiology. Anisur rahman13 berkvens dirk2 david fretin4 claude saegerman3 muzahed uddin ahmed1 noor muhammad5 akram hossain5 and emmanuel abatih2 abstract. Epidemiology of brucellosis in humans and domestic ruminants in bangladesh background brucellosis is an ancient and one of the worlds most widespread zoonotic diseases affecting both public. The results of all seroprevalence studies indicated that brucellosis is an occupational health hazards in bangladesh among milkers livestock farmers and veterinarians.

Brucellosis is one of the most widespread zoonoses in the world and is endemic in most african countries 7 11. Livestock farmers of brucellosis positive herds had a significantly higher probability to be seropositive for brucellosis. Therefore the present study was designed to diagnose brucellosis by adopting i elisa as well as rbt and sat to detect antibodies to brucella organism and to identify the risk factor and distribution of brucellosis in cattle in pabna and mymensingh districts of bangladesh for prevention and control.

The study emphasized that contact with livestock especially goats is a significant risk factor for the transmission of brucellosis among individuals in the hrog. A high seroprevalence of brucellosis 22 has been reported in dairy herd of cheffa state farm sintaro 1994 while most of the studies suggested a low seroprevalence below 5 in cattle under crop livestock mixed farming berhe et al 2007. It is an occupational hazard for livestock farmers milkmen butchers hired animal caretakers and veterinarians 2.

Despite having these advantages there has been limited use of elisa for the diagnosis of brucellosis in bangladesh. Most of the previously reported prevalence studies were based on non random samples which may not give a true representation of the status of the disease in respective populations. The driving factors of the epidemiology of the disease in wildlife livestock and humans in sub saharan africa ssa is not well known and the available data are inadequate 8.

Fever sweating fatigue headache and joint pain are important non specific symptoms of brucellosis in humans. Since the first report in 1970 a lot of brucellosis seroprevalence reports are available in cattle goats sheep and humans in bangladesh. Ibrahim et al 2010.

The type of animals owned or handled and duration of contact with animals and consumption of raw milk are the risk factors associated with brucellosis in humans in bangladesh rahman et al 2012a.
